Is Depression An Epidemic?
There are plenty of statistics that show depression and anxiety are on the rise. The mere fact that when we go to the doctor’s office, we want something to “cure” our feelings of depression, or want to know why we are feeling so much anxiety. Also, depression is so detrimental to us as humans. How to defeat depression and reversing its effects is what we are going to discuss in this post.
Here are some facts from a big organization that counts prescription drugs and how they are being used.
Depression stats 2018
Now, I would like to suggest that there are many reasons for people feeling depressed, but I won’t be discussing that in this post. I think the stats above here are quite eye-opening and need to be resolved. There is a problem going on and I know I don’t have the answers but there are some tell-tale signs that we can look at and start to get a better picture of what’s going on.
Youth Mental Health
The trend that we see here is that there is almost 3.5% more severe depression happening in youths in a span of just 3 years. That’s a trend that is alarming. Do you think that the media is covering things like this? No. The reason could be that there isn’t an answer to this trend.
Quite honestly, if they tried, they would be blasted by the public for not coming up with an answer – or blaming it on the government like everyone seems to be doing these days.
So what can we do about it?
First, we need to limit or at least begin to question the reasoning for prescribing medications. There needs to be a natural way to solve why we are depressed as a nation. I’m saying this simply because the stats also say that there is a rise in painkillers, and all the rest of the pharma solutions.
The bible verse that comes to mind as I write this is John 16:33
I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
Jesus has overcome the world. So why do we look for everything but the answer to the disease?
The reason depression is gaining could be that the use of opioids have skyrocketed because of the access we have to services. These very services are allowing people to write their own prescription for what they think they need.
We have addiction coupled with a resistance to or even callousness to the instructions we were given in the beginning of time. God gave us 10 commandments. As you can see, the 10 commandments are treated nowadays as the 10 suggestions.
Why would a culture ignore what God is saying?
Perhaps the boundaries He sets for us is actually the best thing for us?
My name is Hope has several videos that teach on this subject of depression and anxiety from a Christian perspective.
There are several insights that pastor John Mark Comer presents. These are all biblically based insights and open up many other doors to how we should be acting. As a church, as a people of one mind is how we should be viewed as from a secular perspective.
Solid Rock – a Jesus Church lead pastor, John Mark Comer teaches on depression & anxiety. Something he is all too well familiar with in his life. What he did to solve this issue is write a book.
How To Defeat Depression
There are plenty of references in the bible about depression and anxiety. Take, for instance, a guy by the name of Job. For those that are new to the bible, it’s pronounced, Job, not like we would say you have work to do. I know that it’s tough to tease about this word on a blog but it’s still all in good humor. Back to the book of Job…
Job is a man who is touted as a person that was good and made YHWH happy. He is praising God in the first chapter but the next 39 chapters are not full of praises. In fact, he asks for his life to end at one point in the book.
What about David, the one who slew Goliath. David is not free of depression either. David has written many of the Psalms. Psalms 88 is probably one of the darkest chapters written in the entire Bible. The key point to all of the writings in the bible about depression and anxiety is that there is hope. Jesus is our hope.
Food for thought from Jesus:
… I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Luke 5:31-32
Those are words spoken directly to those that are in a state of depression or anxiety. Jesus meets us at the very place we are in life – messed up. He is in the miracle-working business and will do wonders in your life if you just trust Him to do what is best for you.
So what next? I don’t write to convince you to believe – that’s something only you can do. But I do write to give you hope and to let you know that depression can be reversed. It’s part of the salvation package deal that Jesus gave to those that believe in him.
As you can see, depression and anxiety are way out of control. My personal beliefs are that these ailments are a reflection of some other issue in our life that isn’t right. Therefore, we have anxiety and/or depression that tags along until we make that issue go away by either confronting it or completing what we needed to do in the first place.
This sounds a little vague in my description of my way of thinking. It’s only because there are so many scenarios that you cannot pin out a one way does it all method unless I’m vague like I was in the previous paragraph.
Along with that, I would suggest going to the Holy Spirit FIRST, before immediately heading to the doctor. Sometimes, however, you need to do this on the way to the hospital. Sure there’s a miracle waiting for you. Just make sure you get the Holy Spirits word for whatever your pain is that you’re going through. He will tell you what to do next and how to solve it the first time.
Doctors are a good back up and they are there for a time that they are needed. Since doctors are human too, we should first seek the one who made us in the first place. That’s how to defeat depression and anxiety, and any other disease you may be dealing with.
Lastly, if you’re dealing with a disease…
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, DO NOT say or speak out loud that it’s YOUR DISEASE. I’ve heard this too often and it makes me cringe when people will say, “my diabetes, or my cancer…”. It’s not yours. It’s from the pit of hell. So don’t claim it. Our words are very powerful and said enough in succession, it will be yours.
Here’s why I say this with such conviction. In Mark 11:23 Jesus talks about our words and their power.
Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.
This verse says to speak to the mountain. Meaning if you have a mountain such as a disease, or a daily problem that seems to never disappear. You can speak to it and it will go away. The only qualifier is that you must believe in your heart, not your just your mind.
How To Believe In Your Heart
If you’ve been exposed to the entrepreneurial training, you have heard that you need to change your mindset to be successful. and that is true.
But I am going to take it one step further because Jesus did.
You need to not only change your mindset but you need to change your heart set.
The way to changing what your heart believes is to do it through your words. Your creative words.
Things to start doing would include meditating on a healing scripture or start thinking about what you want to become and speak it out loud several times a day for a period of time until your goal happens.
